hey: how do i extract the specular/multipurpose map embedded in the dds, if thats how its setup. do i just rename it as zip? or what? photoshop opens it with many other repeating maps that decrease in size, much like how guerrilla views bitmaps from halo... what is it that i do? my specs are shit with my uberchassis, and the grav throne. thanks

Oh, yeah. I get the same thing when opening with GIMP. What you should be getting is a million layers and 4 channels. The channels should be red, green, blue, and alpha, and I don't remember how the layers are named. Just flatten all the layers into one image, or take the first layer, I don't think it matters, they should be the same.

Then click over to your channels tab, and deselect the red, green, and blue channels. This just makes it so that when you hit Ctrl-A, it only selects the alpha channel. Then hit Ctrl-A (selects all), Ctrl-C (copy), Ctrl-N (new image, with PS and GIMP it should assume the dimensions of the new image based off what's in your clipboard), Ctrl-V (paste), and the result should be a black and white mask that is the specular. Crop if needed, save in whatever format you like, and if you are feeling a tad OCD, go back to the orignal image and with the alpha channel still selected, hit delete. This will leave the original image with just the diffuse.

I ran into a very old yet still pretty good tutorial somewhere, one sec... ah, there it is:

I don't like his material much, but his explanation of how to do extraction and preparation is quite helpful.

Probably because when you opened a new image, PS or GIMP assumed it was grayscale. Switch it back to RGB if you need to.

Also, maps in Halo are usually stored in either the color (RGB) or alpha (A) slot, but sometimes, with the color changing mask, for instance, they'll disect the RGB and put different maps in each of those channels. With the color changing mask, the red channel is the primary color mask, the green channel is the secondary color mask, and the blue is the tertiary color mask (not used, obviously).
